The public is invited to attend and hear from several engaging presenters about the world-leading protective initiatives taken by The Fund to help keep Lake George clean and clear. LAKE GEORGE, NY — What will it take to reduce the intensifying threat of a toxic algal bloom in Lake George, a devastating problem for a growing number of lakes across the state and around the country?

Is algae growth close to shore and on the lake bottom increasing? And how do we stop it?

How are the public- and private-sectors working together to protect the Lake’s environment and economy from toxic algae, as well as from invasive species and excessive road salt use?

How has Lake George become “the world’s smartest lake” and a model for the future of freshwater protection on a global scale?

These questions and more will be addressed in a series of highly informative and inspiring presentations as The FUND for Lake George presents its 2019 Annual Meeting on Saturday, July 6, from 9-11 a.m. at The Sagamore Resort Conference Center in Bolton Landing.

The Annual Meeting is open to the public at no charge — and is expected to draw record attendance of more than 300 people for presentations demonstrating how The FUND and its public- and private-sector partners are using world-leading science and direct investments to implement innovative solutions to protect the lake. “If you enjoy recreating on Lake George or simply admiring the Lake’s beauty … if you care about the health of our regional Lake-based economy … if you’re excited by science and the application of big data in protecting Lake George… if you want the Lake to be our living legacy for our children and grandchildren, you will find these two hours to be absolutely fascinating and enlightening,” said The FUND’s Board Chairman Jeff Killeen. “This year we will once again raise the bar in honoring the vital importance of Lake George, presenting a memorable program that all who attend will truly enjoy.”

Featured presenters will include:

• Sandra Postel, director of the Global Water Policy Project, author of Replenish: The Virtuous Cycle of Water and Prosperity, and one of the world’s foremost authorities on freshwater stewardship. From 2009-2015, Ms. Postel served as Freshwater Fellow of the National Geographic Society, where she co-created Change the Course, the water stewardship initiative awarded the 2017 US Water Prize for restoring billions of gallons of water to depleted rivers, aquifers and wetlands. She will discuss her extensive experience with freshwater protection efforts around the world and how Lake George is leading by example.

• Dr. John E. Kelly III, executive vice president of IBM and the driving force behind creation of The Jefferson Project, the landmark partnership between IBM, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and The FUND that has built the world’s most advanced environmental monitoring system at Lake George. A longtime resident of Assembly Point on Lake George, Dr. Kelly will provide an update on The Jefferson Project’s work, including its most recent breakthrough, the “scenario engine,” which employs big data to forecast future changes in the Lake’s health and allow for effective preemptive actions to ensure lasting protection. This latest achievement upholds the Project’s purpose of making Lake George the global model for sustained understanding and protection of a threatened ecosystem.

• Kathryn Flacke Muncil, chief executive officer of the Fort William Henry Corp. and chair of The FUND’s Council of Business Advisors. As the chief executive of one of the oldest and most respected Lake-based businesses, Ms. Flacke Muncil will discuss how the environmental and economic health of Lake George go hand-in-hand, and how the regional business community can partner with local governments and organizations like The FUND to meet common goals.

Also highlighting this signature Lake George event will be:

• Presentation of The FUND’s prestigious James D. Corbett Award to Dr. Kelly and Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson, president of RPI, for their leadership in advancing The Jefferson Project.

• Presentation of The FUND’s Irving Langmuir Award to the Town of Queensbury for its actions in protecting Lake George from stormwater runoff, which flushes contaminants and nutrients into the Lake, increasing the risk of toxic algal blooms.

The FUND will also announce nearly $500,000 of direct investments in crucial protection priorities. FUND investments are among the distinguishing features of the organization’s unparalleled commitment to the enduring protection of Lake George. Since 2013, The FUND has invested more than $7 million in protecting the Lake: stopping invasive species, curbing excessive road salt, and reducing wastewater and stormwater pollution.
