Caretaker Position Summary
The Caretaker is responsible for maintaining the historic buildings and beautiful lakeside
grounds of the Wiawaka Center for Women. This role ensures the property remains
safe, welcoming, and well-preserved for guests, staff, and program participants. As the
oldest continuously operating women’s retreat center in the United States, Wiawaka
seeks a caretaker who values stewardship, teamwork, reliability, and takes pride in
caring for a cherished historic property.
Key Responsibilities
Property & Building Maintenance
• Perform routine repairs including painting, carpentry, minor plumbing, and
general upkeep.
• Monitor and maintain fire alarms, lighting, and essential building systems.
• Support seasonal opening and closing of buildings, porches, docks, and guest
areas.
• Ensure all facilities remain clean, functional, and guest-ready each day.
Grounds & Equipment Care
• Maintain lawns, gardens, pathways, porches, and waterfront areas, prioritizing
safety in all guest spaces.
• Oversee golf carts, tools, and maintenance equipment; coordinate servicing and
repairs, including vendor communication.
• Keep outdoor areas safe, tidy, and visually appealing throughout the season.
Operational Support
• Respond promptly to maintenance requests from staff and guests.
• Assist with larger improvement projects and coordinate with contractors and
vendors.
• Work closely with the Buildings & Grounds Committee on long-term planning and
priorities.
• Identify issues proactively and recommend solutions to preserve Wiawaka’s
historic charm.
• Collaborate with housekeeping, front desk, and kitchen teams to support daily
operations.
• Provide weekend support during the off-season for private events, serving as the
primary on-site contact for retreats, groups, and weddings.
• Attend fundraising events to assist with operational needs as required.
• Be on-call and available during the months Wiawaka is open.
• Work closely with the Executive Director on building and maintenance projects.
Qualifications
• Experience in property maintenance, facilities management, landscaping, or
related fields.
• Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently.
• Positive attitude and ability to contribute to a team-oriented environment.
• Comfort with physical tasks including lifting, carrying, climbing ladders, and
outdoor work.
• Basic knowledge of carpentry, painting, plumbing, or electrical systems preferred.
• Reliable, organized, and committed to high standards of care.

Schedule & Compensation
• Year-round housing provided, with increased responsibilities during the open
season (May–October), including opening, private events, operating season, and
closing.
• Competitive compensation based on experience. Salary range ($20- $25 hourly

The Scope of Work (SOW) outlined below is intended to provide the "Contractor" with an understanding of the services required by Queensbury Maintenance, LLC. This work is to be performed in full compliance with the SOW listed below, along with attached support documents. All portions of this work will be
performed by competent and qualified individuals using equipment and materials that are adequate to complete the work. Work will conform to local, state, and federal building, construction and environmental codes, and utilize best industry standard practice wherever possible. It is the responsibility of the contractor to obtain all necessary training pertinent to the work described herein.
To help maintain/ enhance the value of the property through the repair and maintenance of Center structures, furnishings, systems and equipment at the least cost in order to contribute to the maximization of the Center's profitability.
1. Assist customers when and where needed.
2. Performs interior maintenance functions including but not limited to repairs of fixtures, floors, ceiling, walls, installing and finishing drywall, painting, concrete patching, cleaning and various tasks as assigned by management.
3. Performs exterior maintenance functions including; repair of fixtures, roofs, parking lots, and sidewalks.
4. Performs preventative maintenance checks on all equipment to keep it in the best possible condition.
5. Makes basic electrical and plumbing repairs on the property.
6. Performs preventative maintenance checks on HVAC systems and fire protection systems including sprinkler systems and fire extinguishers.
7. Informs supervisor of potential problems with any equipment used or systems responsible for.
8. Acts as a liaison with contracts in areas where it is responsible for maintenance and repair.
9. Ability to safely work from ladder or lifts.
10. Identifies and acts upon if possible source of Tenant maintenance emergencies (example: source of leaks).
11. Capable of safely lifting and moving equipment and materials up to 40 pounds or more.
12. Must speak Spanish fluently.
