Originally conceived in the fall of 2023, this November 15th performance will be a workshop of musical material developed by Miller and Reid after dozens of hours of interviewing scientists, activists and other stakeholders on the unique effects of climate change on the Adirondack Park. Over the course of 2024, they have crafted a piece of mixed media chamber music for cello, voice, piano and electronics that will explore different elements of Adirondack Park ecosystems – be it the ambient noise of birdsong and cicada, to the power effects of food-chain disruption – and how it is threatened by climate change. The piece will accompany North Country Arts’ gallery show “Climate Changes Impact on the Environment”, also running at The Hyde. ABOUT CATHERINE Catherine Reid’s compositions include operas, musicals, oratorios, cabarets, plays with music, dance pieces, instrumental pieces ranging from one instrument to full orchestra as well as vocal pieces ranging from solo to large chorus. Her music has been performed throughout the USA, primarily in NYC and the Capital region. Many of her pieces combine music with other art forms. She has also music directed over 100 musicals, including many original musicals that students created under her direction as well as orchestrated or created arrangements for music in all styles. She has worked with Anthime Miller on several projects including “Holding it All” (poet Bernice Mennis, performed at the Strand) and “What Their Eyes Have Seen” (a musical piece about the pandemic performed as part of the De Blasis Series at the Hyde). She and Anthime started the Cooper’s Cave Composers Consortium that will be having their third concert on November 3rd at the Strand. ABOUT ANTHIME Anthime Miller is an internationally acclaimed cellist, singer and composer based in Brooklyn. Anthime is the composer-in-residence for The Circle Theater of New York and a regular composer and actor with the National Theater of Luxembourg. Anthime is Principal Cellist of the Regina Opera Company and Protestra and is a regular performer with other orchestras and chamber ensembles across North America and Europe. They are a frequent collaborator with Glens Falls based composer Catherine Reid, with “Close To The Earth” being their third collaborative composition. They continue to be grateful for any opportunity to work with Reid, for the continued support of North Country Arts, the tireless work of Dr. Jacquiline Touba and to bring new original music to the Greater Glens Falls Region. This program is made possible in part with funds from the Statewide Community Regrant Program of the NYS Council of the Arts with support of the office of the Governor and the NYS Legislature and administered by the Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council.
