Celebrating St. Patrick's Day
Posted: 3/17/2021 - 2-minute Read
What would St. Patrick's Day be without corned beef and cabbage? Local restaurants in the Lake George region have put together some delicious menus available for dining in and for takeout.
Ever wonder where the corned beef and cabbage tradition came from? The corned beef enjoyed in the United States on St. Patrick's Day is actually a Jewish-style corned beef. This type of meat was used as a substitute by Irish immigrants in the U.S. in the late 1800s for a bacon meat they enjoyed in Ireland. The corned beef and cabbage we know today is actually an Irish-American reinvention of the Irish dish of bacon and cabbage. Irish bacon is usually made from the back of the pig rather than the belly.
Why is it called "corned" beef? There's no corn in the recipe, but the word corn was used to describe the size of salt crystals for curing the meat.
