NYSPHSAA Boys Basketball Championship
Posted: 3/11/2020
UPDATE 3/12/2020 — This event has officially been postponed. We will provide more information when it becomes available. Below is a post from before the event was postponed.
The NYSPHSAA Boys Basketball Championship was originally scheduled to be hosted at the Cool Insuring Arena in downtown Glens Falls on Friday, March 20 and Saturday, March 21.
In regards to the growing situation with the coronavirus, the NYSPHSAA is currently monitoring the situation day by day. They released a statement on Sunday, March 8, stating that they plan to have the games as planned and are looking closely at the situation if it were to escalate further. “...changes to the championship events could become necessary and warranted.” The NYSPHSAA said. They also stated “It is important for schools and athletes to practice risk mitigation as they prepare for participation in championship events and to follow recommendations from the New York State Department of Health.”

With threats of coronavirus spreading, tourism across the globe is experiencing crushing losses. Predicted to be in the billions of dollars. Flights, hotel rooms, cruises, conventions, sporting events and business meetings are all being cancelled throughout early 2020 and into the summer and the tourism industry is facing challenges to stay afloat.
With less people traveling across the country or overseas, more people are taking trips closer to home, hopefully making up for some of the losses caused by the reduction in tourists. We are glad to see events such as the NYSPHSAA Championship remain open and offer relief for local businesses.
With the slow season here on top of COVID-19, events such as these championship games are crucial for our local economy, bringing visitors to the region during the slower tourism months.
In 2019, the Lake George Regional Convention & Visitors Bureau booked 32 events to take place over a multi-year span from 2019 to 2024. These event bookings include 12,608 room nights resulting in an estimated economic impact of approximately $6.5 million.
The CVB exceeded its goal for the third year in a row. The hard work of this team led to a 64% increase in room nights over 2018 when 27 events — including 7,711 room nights — were booked over a multi-year span.
This year for the 2020 NYSPHSAA Boys Basketball Championship, the Lake George Regional Convention & Visitors Bureau assisted in booking and housing the event at the Cool Insuring Arena
