Six Flags Great Escape to Retire Alpine Bobsled Trackless Coaster After 25 Years of Thrills

Guests Encouraged to Visit by September 4 to Bid Farewell to the Popular Lake George Attraction

LAKE GEORGE, NY — Aug 4, 2023 — Six Flags Great Escape, the thrill capital of upstate New York, will retire the unique Olympics-inspired Alpine Bobsled coaster with the ride’s last scheduled run to be Monday, September 4. Thrill seekers throughout the region will want to get in their final runs on the beloved trackless coaster. For 25 years, Alpine Bobsled has thrilled riders as they rocket down the track in a themed toboggan, gliding around every turn like a champion bobsledder. The ride was originally constructed in 1984 at Six Flags Great Adventure and also operated at Six Flags Great America from 1989-1995.

Alpine Bobsled opened at Six Flags Great Escape in 1998. For 25 years, the popular coaster has entertained millions of guests, young and old, who have delighted in the adventurous theme of the unique, trackless coaster. Inspired by the Winter Olympics in nearby Lake Placid, teams take their place in internationally themed bobsleds to get a taste of the thrilling winter sport.

Pulsing through the interior of the snow-white half-pipe, guests race down the mountain track from an elevation of 64 feet, winding down the hillside and banking up the walls of every adrenaline-pumping turn, reaching a top speed of 35 miles per hour on the 1500-foot course, winning the gold medal in fun.

“It’s always difficult to say goodbye to a popular attraction, especially something as unique as Alpine Bobsled.” said Park President Rebecca Wood. “We always have our eye on new ways to excite our guests and retiring older attractions is a necessary part of that process. We will continue to evaluate this space for future enhancements we know our guests will love.”

Alpine Bobsled will be open to the public through Monday, September 4.

The resort is currently hiring for Fright Fest and for a variety of positions across departments, including a seamless rapid-hire option for qualified applicants. A variety of departments and positions offers exciting opportunities with flexible hours and great perks, and many jobs start at $15 per hour.
