Prospect Mountain Veterans Memorial Highway Honors Veterans
Prospect Mountain Veteran's Memorial Highway : 2176 Route 9, Lake George, NY 12845
9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
In honoring all veterans, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation invites the public to enjoy the views from Prospect Mountain for free on two weekends and Veterans Day (Nov. 11).
Both November 2&3 and November 9-11, Prospect Mountain Veterans Memorial Parkway will be open for free in honor of Veterans Day.
The regular cost is $10 per car and $5 per motorcycle and $50 for commercial bus.
There are three lookouts that show different views of Lake George along the 5.5-mile scenic drive from the entry gate to the parking lot just below the summit.
You can take a shuttle the rest of the way to the summit or hike up a short paved trail and set of stairs to the top. The shuttle includes a video about the history of the mountain.
At the top (2,030 foot elevation), take in a 360-degree 100-mile view on a clear day. See Vermont’s Green Mountains, New Hampshire’s White Mountains, the High Peaks of the Adirondacks and (on a very clear day) the Laurentian Mountains of Canada.
At the top you can also view the remains of the world’s largest old cable railway, which transported guests to the top when there was a hotel.
There’s also picnic tables and BBQ grills available near the summit. You can even rent a picnic pavilion there for $75 a day.
Local veterans will be on hand to greet visitors at the parking area.
